Join an AHS team
Every AHS student can play on a team every season. Here is how to get on the roster.
5 steps to join an AHS team
Get a sports physical
Required before tryouts. For high school (UHSAA) sports it must be dated on or after March 10 for the coming school year. For middle school sports it must be from within the last year. Details
Register
High school UHSAA teams register on RegisterMyAthlete. Middle school and USSA teams turn in the required forms to the coach. How to register
Check the schedule and attend tryouts
Look over the team’s schedule first, including playoffs, and tell the head coach about any conflicts. Payment isn’t needed before tryouts.
Sign the commitments
Once you make the team, sign the Baseline Commitment form, which sets out your responsibilities as a player, and the Patriot Pact.
Pay the participation fee
Pay through the payments section of the Veracross Parent Portal. Paying adds the athlete to the team roster in Veracross, which excuses them from class for away games. Athletes can’t compete until the fee is paid. Financial aid is available.
Registration
High school UHSAA teams: RegisterMyAthlete
Everyone on a UHSAA team, which is most of our high school teams, must be registered on registermyathlete.com to be eligible to compete. Create an account to begin. Registration includes the AHS Honor Code, Participant Waiver, Commitment Form, Health Exam and Consent Form, and the Uniform Policy Commitment Form, all linked on the site. Students transferring from another school may be asked for other documents and may have a waiting period before playing at the varsity level.
Middle school and USSA teams
Turn in the required participant forms to your coach: the AHS Honor Code, Participant Waiver, Commitment Form, Health Exam and Consent Form, and Uniform Policy Commitment Form. Find them under “Required Participant Forms” on the athletics overview page. Families with an athlete in more than one sport turn the forms in once a school year, as long as the health exam is still valid.
Annual physical
A sports physical is required before an athlete may try out. For UHSAA high school sports, the physical must be dated on or after March 10 for that school year. For middle school sports, it must be dated within the last year.
Athletics financial aid
Financial support is available to families who have difficulty paying participation fees. To ask about financial support for a sports team, contact Yahosh Bonner, Athletics Director.
Full participation policy
Every AHS student will have the opportunity to participate on a team each season. In most cases students play the sport of their choice. Because of team size, coaching capacity, facilities, and keeping the experience positive, some students may be offered an alternative sport: Cross Country in the fall, and Track and Field in the winter and spring. Depending on the team, a coach may also form a JV or developmental team.
Playing time is an earned privilege, not a right. Making a team doesn’t guarantee significant playing time; coaches decide based on the best interests of the team.
Students who make a team commit to it in word and deed: every practice, game, and team function. Absences must be communicated to the coach in advance. Students may not be on a drama production and a sports team in the same season.
Eligibility
- Who can play: students enrolled more than 50% at the American Fork campus, paying full-time tuition, and taking core AHS classes such as English and History.
- AHS academic standard: no more than two failing grades (below C-) across the four terms of a school year.
- UHSAA standard, checked at the end of every term: no more than one failing class and at least a 2.0 GPA in the preceding grading period.
- Class attendance: students must attend class to play. Three tardies or one unexcused absence makes an athlete ineligible for the next game, after one warning.
- Sports we don’t offer: AHS students may play a sport AHS doesn’t offer, such as tackle football, at another school while staying enrolled here.
